Voice of Detroit’s Diane Bukowski wrote this June 4, 2022 article regarding the disappointment advocates expressed in Dana Nessel/Val Newman’s decision to “close” Temujin Kensu’s case and that in doing so, the CIU “betrays all”.
St Clair County Press Release on June 3, 2022 is riddled with omissions of the facts in the Kensu case to include that 95% of his appeals were “rubber-stamp denied” and NOT thoroughly investigated in any sense of the word, nor do they mention the Habeas that Temujin WON citing prosecutorial misconduct by Robert Cleland and that he should be provided a new trial or freed from prison.
On Memorial Day 2022, George Hunter of The Detroit News writes, “Dana Nessel draws Criticism from high-profile supporters over review of ‘86 murder conviction” and the article calls out the multiple discrepancies in the “New Evidence” language provided by Director Frankyl and how that language changed without anybody being informed.

May 19, 2022 - Click on Detorit via Associated Press - Michigan AG said it found no "new evidence" to support a claim of innocence, however advocates strongly disagree. The AG changed the eligibility criteria on their website without notifying anybody. (More on that below).

This article published on Saturday, October 30, 2010 by The Times Herald states that Prosecutor Robert Cleland did not err in the 1987 murder case. Since then, he has told multiple reporters that we sent his way that he does not comment on any of his cases.

In 2011, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) published this portrait of the 13 worst wrongful convictions in the state. As of August 2022, all except 3 of the men are now released or exonerated. The ACLU includes a great summary of the cost to taxpayers and the burden on families.

This October 2016 Detroit Free Press article quotes prosecutor Mike Wendling in St. Clair County Michigan who complains that Temujin Kensu is “manipulating a system” by filing appeals “again and again.”

In this December 2019 Detroit News article, Nolan Finley writes to Michigan residents to explain how Temujin spent yet another Christmas behind bars for a crime that was impossible for him to have committed. In the article, he quotes Kensu who he visited on Christmas day at the Macomb Regional prison in Lenox Township, Michigan.

In this August 2021 Detroit News article, journalist Nolan Finley describes how Michigan’s Governor should Free Temujin Kensu in honor of the late honorable Senator Carl Levin who fought tirelessly until the end to urge Michigan leaders to free Kensu.
In this April 2022 article, author Jim Bloch of BlueWater Healthy Living writes of “Temujin Kensu’s exoneration case appears to languish in state conviction integrity unit” and expresses the frustration of Kensu’s friends and supporters who are exasperated by how long it’s taking to free him. Please note: He references the “Innocence Project” in the article, but he should have referenced “Proving Innocence” which is the non-profit organization that is sponsoring Temujin’s release.
In this August 8, 2007 article by Sandra Svoboda of the Detroit Metro Times, Reasonable doubt Part II: chronicles how Fred Freeman (Temujin Kensu)’s wife Denise Deringer wrote to him in prison and at first doubted his innocence, read about his case, then later married him while he was incarcerated.
The Ninja Series - 1990s - Channel 7 ABC Detroit News anchor Bill Proctor reports on Temujin Kensu’s wrongful conviction and provides for a polygraph examination to be taken by Michigan State Police expert polygrapher Chester Romatowski. The results of the polygraph are aired on television and several theories are presented.

In this Port Huron Times Herald article dated April 18, 1993, reports that David Dean (Temujin’s trial attorney) was struggling with cocaine abuse and was suspended as an attorney. This article also notes that in September 1991, Randy Overton was granted a new trial listing Mr. Dean’s substance abuse problematic in his defense. Overton was released from prison, but Temujin was not. (Every case that Dean worked on in a two year period resulted in an overturned conviction due to ineffective counsel, with the exception of the Kensu case).
The Port Huron Times Herald (same town that Scott Macklem was killed in), published this May 19, 1987 article regarding the votes count during the Freeman (Kensu) trial.
